Over the past few years, questions have been raised about the risk of fires in tall buildings. Following the Grenfell Tower Fire, a decision was taken to ban combustible materials in the cladding for buildings over 18m in height. This change to Approved Document 7 came into force on 21 December 2018. So what impact has this change had on how we design and construct tall building?

Richard Smith
Head of Standards, Innovation & Research at NHBC
Having started his career as a YTS trainee in building control back in 1989, Richard is now the Head of Standards, Innovation and Research at NHBC. He oversees the delivery and implementation of NHBC's Technical Standards, Technical policy, Acceptance of innovative and non-traditional construction methods and leads the NHBC Foundation. Richard is a member of The Building Regulations Advisory Committee and supports a number of subcommittees including new building broadband connectivity, Part M Working Group and Building Act 1984 working group.
Dr. Jim Glockling
Former Director & Technical Director FPA / RISCAuthority
Jim began his career at the Atomic Energy Authority, Harwell as a sandwich student. AEA later re-employed Jim and sponsored his PhD to further develop his career. Jim went on to undertake a post-doctorate study at the Fire Research Station and worked at South Bank University London as a lecturer in chemical and fire safety engineering. From 2002 to June this year, Jim was Technical Director at the Fire Protection Association where he undertook research into fire protection, with particular emphasis on risk avoidance, reduction and management.
John Duffin

John started his career as Technical Sales Manager for Keystone Lintels and since then has built a reputation on a wide range of industry knowledge, product development skills and customer service relationships.

Marcus has been with IG Masonry Support for over 8 years, joining as a Technical Engineer before progressing into a Technical Sales Manager role and now the company’s Estimating Manager. Leading the estimating team, Marcus and his team are the first point of contact for IG Masonry Support, liaising with customers on their exact requirements and providing accurate quotations for their projects.
Jamie Davies
CEO at Part B
Jamie is highly experienced in fire safety matters across all types of buildings. He offers specialisms on large and small residential developments and has consulted on design, construction and fire safety management for over 10 years. He has acted as an independent expert in many disputes surrounding construction deficiencies in residential flats, houses and commercial buildings. These include a number of high court litigations, adjudications and a pending Court of Appeal case. He has acted as a shadow expert advisor for a high-profile incident to support a commercial client through a public inquiry, and acted as an expert advisor for a client subjected to media allegations.
Jamie has provided expert assessments upon the suitability of external wall systems and contributed to the investigation of fires involving cladding systems. He worked with flammability testing of systems which contributed to fire development and has also provided post-fire investigation expertise for large-profile fires - commenting upon building pathology and fire spread mechanisms for legal proceedings.
Jamie has been an active member of British Standard committees, contributing to the authoring of major fire safety guidance documents such as BS 9997.
